Northern Health has been working collaboratively with the Queen Charlotte/Haida Gwaii Hospital project design-builder, Bouygues Building Canada (BBC) as the project continues to move towards completion and opening.
As part of the process, Northern Health is required to review the construction of the facility to ensure it is being built to meet the high construction standards and meets all legal and building code requirements. During construction, we want to make sure we get the project right, and if there are any potential changes that are needed that they are made before the building opens.
This update is to inform the community that a routine inspection by Northern Health has identified that the roof cladding on the Queen Charlotte/Haida Gwaii Hospital project does not meet the current B.C. Building Code requirements. BBC is developing a timeline and a plan to ensure the roof meets these requirements while limiting the impact on the opening schedule for the project. Correction of the roof cladding design and construction is the responsibility of the design-builder BBC.
Construction is continuing on the new Queen Charlotte/Haida Gwaii Hospital while this additional work is underway. The roof and exterior walls on the facility are weather-tight for winter conditions, and BBC continues to make progress on the interior. The interior construction of the primary care clinic space is nearing completion, and excellent progress is also now being achieved on the second floor interior finishing work. New equipment for the facility is on order and is starting to be shipped to the site. The installation of kitchen equipment has been completed.
We will provide more information as it becomes available.
