Northern Health has been working collaboratively with the Queen Charlotte/Haida Gwaii Hospital project design-builder, Bouygues Building Canada (BBC) as the project continues to move towards completion and opening.
As part of the process, Northern Health is required to review the construction of the facility to ensure it is being built to meet the high construction standards and all legal and building code requirements. During construction, Northern Health is working to make sure that if any potential changes are needed, that they are made before the building opens.
This update is to inform the community that BBC will begin replacement of the roof cladding with new material this month. This follows a routine inspection by Northern Health that identified the roof cladding on the Queen Charlotte/Haida Gwaii Hospital project does not meet the current B.C. Building Code requirements. BBC has developed a plan and a timeline to complete this work, and it is expected the facility will open in the fall of 2016 after the work is complete. Correction of the roof cladding design and construction is the responsibility of the design-builder BBC.
Construction is continuing on the new Queen Charlotte/Haida Gwaii Hospital while this additional work is underway. The roof and exterior walls on the facility are weather-tight, and BBC continues to make progress on the interior. The interior construction of the primary care clinic space is complete, and excellent progress is also now being achieved on the second floor interior finishing work.
Northern Health will provide more information as it becomes available.
