You have been provided with an envelope with one to three cardboard slides inside.

For accurate test results:
  •  Read 'patient instructions' completely before performing test.
  • Apply samples from bowel movements collected on three different days to slides.
  • Do not collect samples if blood is visible in your stool or urine (e.g. menstruation, active hemorrhoids, urinary tract infection). Contact your doctor.
  • Protect cards from heat, light and volatile chemicals (iodine, ammonia, bleach, and household cleaners).
  • Remove toilet bowl cleaners from toilet tank and flush twice before proceeding.

Drug Guidelines:

  • For seven days before and during the stool collection period avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), naproxen or aspirin (more than one adult aspirin a day).
  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol) can be taken as needed.
  • For three days before and during stool collection period avoid vitamin C in excess of 250mg a day from supplements, and citrus fruits and juices.

Diet Guidelines:

  • For three days before and during stool collection period avoid red meats (beef, lamb and liver).
  • Eat a well balanced diet including fibre such as bran cereals, fruits and vegetables.
Notes:
  • Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about medications you take regularly.
  • 100% of RDA (recommended daily allowance) of vitamin C for an adult is 60mg a day.
  • Some iron supplements contain vitamin C in excess of 250mg.

Patient Collection Instructions:
Steps: Do not tear the sections apart.

1.

Using a pen, pencil or permanent marker
write your first and last name on cards 1, 2 and 3.
Write your date of birth (day/month/year) on
the yellow lines of cards 1, 2 and 3.
Day 1:  Write the date and time of collection on
the 'sample collection date' line of card #1 and then lift up tab.

2.

Collect a sample of stool.  There are two different methods to
collect a stool sample:
First Method:  Place a newspaper or stretch plastic wrap underneath
the toilet seat, in such a way that the stool sample does not come into
contact with the toilet bowl water.
Second Method:  Collect the sample in any clean and dry disposable
container (i.e. plastic container, paper plate).

3.

Using the same wooden stick from the test kit, take a small
piece of stool (i.e. smaller than the size of a pea) and make a
very thin smear of stool from edge of Window A.

4.

Using the same wooden stick, collect another small sample from a
different area of the stool and make a very thin smear of stool from
edge to edge of Window B.

5.

Throw away the wooden stick and dispose of all remaining stool.

6.

When the samples are dry, close the cover of the test card.  Put the tab of the cover under the tab holder.
7.
  • Day 2:  Repeat all the steps using card 2.
  • Day 3:  Repeat all the steps using card 3.
8.

When all 3 samples have been collected:

  • Put the cards into envelope provided.
  • Place envelope and requisition in bag provided by laboratory.
  • Bring bag back to the laboratory  no later than 14 days  after the first sample collection.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Laboratory.
For the results of your test, please contact your doctor.
